We’re very pleased to present a duo presentation ‘Substitute Love’ with works by German artist Jens Kothe (DE, 1985) and Belgian - Dutch artist duo MIDDERNACHT & ALEXANDER (BE, 1985 & NL, 1990). The exhibition will be on view from 21st of January until 26th of February 2023.

"Substitute Love" is a duo exhibition that explores the theme of self-perception, both physical and psychological. Jens Kothe and Middernacht & Alexander each bring their unique perspectives to the show, using different materials to underscore their conceptual ideas.

Kothe presents wall objects that are inspired by the human body, with shapes and colors that evoke intimacy and sensuality. His fragmented and degraded objects reflect the struggle between man and machine. Middernacht & Alexander, on the other hand, balance form and content in their photography, installations, and sculptures. They delve into the relationship between intimacy and voyeurism in portrait photography, examining how we perceive ourselves and others. The exhibition is a participatory experience, with works that invite the audience to interact and engage in a dialogue.

Overall, "Substitute Love" is a thought-provoking show that invites visitors to reflect on their own perceptions of the self and others.
The duo exhibition ‘Substitute Love’ is built around ‘How do we perceive ourselves and others?’. Whereas JENS KOTHE always starts from the physical self, the human body, MIDDERNACHT & ALEXANDER’s work focuses more on the perception of the self, being physical and psychological.
Both artists have an outstanding understanding on how to use certain materials to underline the conceptual idea of their work.
